“What would you do ?” used to figure on the cover of a boys’ comic called “Boys’ World”. This was a publication, obviously, aimed at boys, and first appeared on January 26th 1963. There were 89 issues before the comic was merged with Eagle in 1964. The last issue of “Boys’ World” came out on October 3rd 1964.
I used to buy “Boys’ World”, and this was mainly for the front cover which always featured a kind of puzzle. It was called “What would you do ?” and was based on somebody being in what Ned Flanders would call “A dilly of a pickle”. Here’s the situation:

And here’s that yellow box enlarged:

And the correct solution was now relegated to page 9 of the comic. Here it is:

And the text, a bit blurry for my taste at this point, reads:
“This was the exact situation Buffalo Bill faced on one of his many buffalo hunts. He saved himself by shooting the leading buffalo, knowing that the rest of the herd would avoid the fallen animal. He then crouched down behind the carcass, using it as a shield, and escaped without a scratch from the stampede passing him on either side. “

Who knew?! 🤪
Well, if you go back to the post which set the puzzle, a good number of people seem to have solved it, although that may well be a situation where a group of people are all copying the solution offerd by just one of them.
haha, and I had the old guy riding one of them!
Not sure about this one. He has got to shoot the animal stone cold dead, no good just wounding it, wait for it to drop and then run towards it to take shelter. Seems optimistic to me.
I think that for the purposes of the puzzle we have to presume that BB kills the buffalo first shot.
In actual fact, the buffalo was an extremely easy animal to kill, as the herds didn’t flush at the sound of a gun. This guaranteed their virtual extimnction in a relatively short period of time, some 70-80 years.
According to Wiki he used an 1866 Allin Conversion Springfield Rifle, caliber .50-70.

Thanks for that. It sounds quite a ferocious animal, and I will be leaving it well alone!
I knew this, because out here in the American West, we’re taught this sort of thing in school … 😉
I wish we had been. It would have been a lot more relevant than a lot of things we had to learn in school.
That’s some powerful rifle!
I shall remember that next time I’m faced by a charging herd of buffalo.
The irony is that buffalo rarely charge!
I can’t imagine they’d take you by ‘surprise’ either. You must be able to see them from miles away.
Absolutely correct. And a herd of buffalo didn’t all gallop off at the sound of a gun and the sight of one of them dropping dead. Instead, they would just carry on grazing and you could kill as many as you wanted to. This made the genocide of the Native American a very do-able proposition.
Thank you for sharing the answer!!… didn’t see any buffalo but were watching the London New Year Parade on the local PBS station. saw Harleymann Kemp perform (along with many others), saw the Londonerry Lancers band perform (along with may others), saw the London Borough of Harrow (Save Harrow, Save The Planet) float (along with many others) and All The Queen’s Horses all dressed up along with a lot of other views of London and the people… bit overcast and cool it seemed but otherwise a wonderful parade… 🙂
Hope you and yours have a wonderful New Year filled with peace and happiness and until we meet again..
May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life’s passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!
(Irish Saying)
Ironically, this parade was not featured by the BBC. Your description of the weather as a “bit overcast and cool” was spot on, though, It described our seasons very well……..they have all merged into one lately!!
It is a wonder how buffaloes can sidestep the fallen one when they are running at such speed. Humans would have fallen over each other. You must have anticipated the solution then. 🙂
That’s a good question, Lakshmi. Perhaps buffaloes are a little bit cleverer than human beings. It would’t take too many extra brain cells!
